I Can't Say Enough Good Things About Akira

Posted on Saturday July 12, 2008 at 1:00am in ,

It seems like not enough people have seen the 1988 classic anime movie, Akira. I put this on the required viewing list for anyone that asks me for movie recommendations. I have seen it more times than I can count. The movie is based off of a graphic novel series by the same title and it was directed by the author. However, I’d never bothered to pick up the book because I figured I’d seen it all already – and it is all together about 2,500 pages spread over 6 books. Well, I finally decided to do it and just finished them last week. And I gotta say, I had only seen the tip of the iceburg! It was brilliant, amazing, epic, and nostalgiac!

Much to my glee, I found out that they are making a live-action Akira movie (this means it will have actors, rather than animation) due out in 2009. It’s going to be split into two movies and will be telling the exact story of the manga. I loved the original movie, but I really can’t wait to see this! The first movie is due in 2009 and will star Leonardo DcCaprio as Kaneda and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tetsuo. All in all, not only is Akira my favorite comic but also probably one of my favorite books of all time.

Moving on, Afro Samurai starring Samuel Jackson was very interesting. It was very funny at parts, had a lot of great action, and the story was great once it got going. The only problem I had with it is that Samuel Jackson has too few speaking lines, and he’s the main character! (he probably charges by the syllable). Anyways, it was interesting and I really loved the ending. I would only recommend this to people who find the title “Afro Samurai” appealing, however.

An Afterthought: I am looking for talented artists with experience in comics to work with me on turning my book, Spicy Licks, into a comic. I have the entire story already outlined, but I think that this super hero story would make a better comic than a book! The only problem is that I can’t draw. So, if you’re interested, contact me.
