Twitter has been getting a lot of press lately. Apparently, a lot of famous people have finally taking it up as a hobby. For those of you that don’t know what Twitter is (good for you), it’s a “social-networking” site where you can enter in a short blip about what you are currently doing. It’s basically a status update that gets sent out to all of your friends’ mobiles and/or computers… That way everyone you know will always know what you are doing and vise versa.
What I wonder is how this caught on. Twitter is becoming very popular lately, and it provides an essentially worthless service. You can tell whoever you want to know what you are doing… what you are doing yourself with little to no hassle as it is. Do you really need to update your ‘status’ constantly? There are a few websites that do this already (Myspace and Facebook to name two) and they have a lot more depth to them. With Twitter, all you get is a status bar that asks the question: “What are you doing now?”I really see no use in this. I don’t think Twitter is going to last long, especially with its lack of features. To me it seems that Facebook and Myspace accomplish similar things and do it better. One last point I’d like to make is this: You don’t need to know what all of your friends are doing at any given time. They don’t need to know what you’re doing either. No one cares. Twitter: Big waste of time or biggest waste of time? You decide!
