Day 2 in Los Angeles was a very full day. There are a lot of pictures! According to plan, I woke up pretty early. I woke up around 7, right before the sun came up. Ai and Atsushi were still asleep (of course, they were very tired) so I decided to take a shower and take a small stroll by myself. LA was so beautiful in the morning. I walked out on to the patio and this was what I saw.
Morning view, right outside the door. Oh, notice the snowboard and surfboard above!

To the right is the beach.
Coming down the stairs. I really liked the lighting here.
Unfortunately, I didn’t really take any pictures on my walk. I really wish I would have, but I pretty much kept my camera under my arm the entire time. Ai and Atsushi didn’t wake up until past 11 so I rented a bike and biked up to Santa Monica Pier as well. That was a nice ride and the weather was perfect. It was sunny, warm, and so many people were out on the beach. This is January! Wisconsin is so different from California.
When they did wake up we went to have lunch around Beverly Hills. They chose a Vegan place called Real Food Daily.
On the way.
At the restaurant. They had these specialty juices you could order. Atsushi’s was bright orange.
Ai ordered a juice called Whole Apple. It was the best apple juice ever. Photo credit Atsushi Tanaka.
Atsushi got sandwiches around Caesar salad. It was delicious.
Mine was a flatbread of some sort. Also very good.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant. The prices weren’t bad either, but it wasn’t super cheap just because of its location around Hollywood.
After eating we wanted to go see the Hollywood sign.

We saw the Hollywood sign from the car so we decided to park on the street and see if we could get in for a closer look on foot.
Unfortunately, we were a bit too optimistic. We couldn’t find a path that would give us a better view than we had from the street, so we gave up and decided to head to the walk of fame and try for the sign later.

Star Wars droids.
I love this picture.
Found a large shopping center. Ai and Atsushi wanted to buy souvenirs.
And we did find the Hollywood sign at the top! Photo credit Atsushi Tanaka.
Ok, you can’t really see it in the picture, but trust me the sign is behind me. Photo credit Atsushi Tanaka.
This very crooked photo brought to you by Ai Irie.
After we had our fill of Hollywood we drove down to Santa Monica beach to see Santa Monica Pier at night. It was beautiful, but a bit too cold for short sleeves. Ai didn’t have a jacket so I gave her my hoodie but I was cold then it was very cold for me.

Santa Monica Pier, we have arrived.
The Ferris wheel. I actually wanted to ride it this time, but I was freezing and the line was super long.
Looks like a dream.
We didn’t really do anything on the pier other than sightseeing. Ai and Atsushi were getting hungry so we decided to go to dinner. They had already chosen the restaurant – Chaya. It was a really nice place but when we walked into it, I felt pretty bad having only a t-shirt and shorts on. It was definitely a bit fancier. Looking at the prices, we decided that this would be Ai’s birthday dinner (it wasn’t cheap).
I ordered a rose champagne.

Atsushi can’t really drink. One drink and his face goes red.
This is what I chose. Prime rib and small potatoes with garlic. It was great.
I took a photo of our bill because I couldn’t believe we got charged for water! $17 for water – pretty funny to me because I hadn’t seen that before. Oddly enough, the bread was free.
When we finished the birthday dinner (it was very good), we went to the Griffith Observatory to see a night view of LA. It took us a while to find it because the main route was closed, but we did make it up eventually. We only had 30 minutes before close, but we did manage to get some good shots of the city from the outside.
Los Angeles at night.
I love LA!
That’s all for Day 2. After the observatory we took a Starbucks break to decide the plan for Day 3 and then we went back. Coming up tomorrow: morning bike ride on the beach, renting a Mustang convertible, In-N-Out burger, Rodeo Drive, Long Beach, Yoshinoya, and Ai’s birthday celebration!
