Friday was the day of the last JCS event of the year. Traditionally, the last event we hold in the spring is a cookout, followed by elections for new officers. Thankfully, the weather (somewhat) cooperated and we were able to follow tradition. Yuki, Kyoko and I went shopping between classes to get all of the stuff for cooking out and then at 6:30 we got the show on the road. Here are some pictures from the last JCS event of the year!

Brian made a great hamburger model.

After we had eaten most of the food we had, we decided to head inside to the conference room for the elections (it was getting cold out). The conference room was nice because everyone could sit down at the same table and focus on the elections. Also, there was a white-board. We got a cake and Kyoko wrote on it:

JCS End of the Year Cookout 2011
It means “Thanks for your hard work, JCS.”

JCS End of the Year Cookout 2011
Explaining the voting process.

At the end of the year, all of the officer positions end and elections have to be held again. I was running for president this time.

The nominees.

And the results were…. drumroll

I won the presidency! I’m now the president of JCS. I have been treasurer for three years and I will really miss that (it will be strange to not know exactly how much money JCS has anymore). But, more important than a treasurer, JCS needs a leader with a lot of experience (especially with the folk fair) for next semester. Yuki won the co-treasurer position so she will continue to be treasurer with Kelsey. Kyoko is now the Vice-President, and Minori and Emelia are the new secretaries. Already I am excited for next semester’s JCS events to begin!

By the way, if you want to see the rest of the photos, all of them are online on the JCS website, here.

JCS has been so busy with the fundraiser for Japan Earthquake Relief that we haven’t done anything with the whole group in a while. The officers figured it was about time to organize another movie / food night to get everyone together and celebrate the hard work we put in for the fundraiser. We went with last movie night’s runner up food and runner up movie. For the food we cooked pork curry and watched 時をかける少女 (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time).

Minori, Kyoko, Brittany and I went shopping early on Friday to get all of the stuff we would need. We got stuff for making curry, and also some things that we could use to make a poster with. We wanted to make a poster to advertise JCS at next years’ organization bash!

Here are some photos from the night.

Emelia, too.

Brian could tell that the curry was ready.

JCS Movie Night Pt II
We made two big pots of curry. It lasted most of the night.

I think that compared to last movie night, not as many people showed up. Which is good, because last time we had a lot of people and not enough food to feed everyone! But you know, if you set up free food – they will come…

JCS Movie Night Pt II
Abba and Erik got injured playing basketball all day.

After the movie we decided to get started on making the JCS poster. I picked out the photos and had them printed. Kelsey did most of the organizing, and she did a good job. Brian did some decorating and the rest of us mostly watched.

The poster still isn’t done yet, we still have to write things on it. It’ll be looking good soon!

And lastly, it was time for lots of dishes.

The week after next we are having our last function of the year (already…) and I’m really looking forward to it! We’re going to have a cookout and hold elections for next year’s office. All of the officer positions will now be up for grabs. I will be running for president this time around.

Oh, and one more thing. I translated another song from Japanese. This one actually took me a long time to translate and was the hardest one I’ve done yet. It didn’t fit into English very easily, but I think I did a good job. Enjoy one of my favorite songs: “Drag On” by LAST ALLIANCE:

The first big news I have today is that JCS, together with ISA has raised over $2000 for Japan! We donated $2150 on Wednesday, and we recently broke the $3000 dollar mark. We’re earning a lot of money for earthquake relief in Japan! Here are some pictures from the check writing and donation…

This was our first donation. A check to the Red Cross for $2000.

DONATED.

The other exciting news I have to share is that we made local news! Reporter Jenny You came to campus to interview JCS members about the recent travel restrictions on Japan, and also about our fundraiser. I was very disappointed to be offered an interview but having class at that time! You can read the article and watch the video by clicking the image below:

JCS really wanted to help Japan in some way after the giant earthquake. We decided to sell wristbands and buttons with all proceeds going directly to aiding Japan. This was the second day of sales. We set up tables all around campus and at 6 different local businesses. It was a big success! Here are some shots from the second day of the fundraiser.

We has a huge second day of sales. We made about $1600 (rough estimate) just that day. We still have to count up the total sales, but I can’t wait to send it over to Japan!

On Thursday night before the big earthquake in Japan, there was a big celebration of Asia on campus. The Malaysian and Chinese organizations put the whole show together and invited Japan to be one of the thirteen countries present. JCS was happy to attend and did a performance of Soran-Bushi, a traditional fisherman dance. We also participated in the fashion show. Here are some shots from the evening.

After the fashion, India did a cool dance:
